Welcome to the expanded autumn 2011/winter 2012 edition of GaryWaters.ca.
As always, we would like to thank each and every one of you, our loyal customers, for your patronage and support. Canadians truly embrace the coming of the fall season. The chance to don our new jackets, boots and sweaters and gather around the fireplace at night is just a way of life in the north. No need to rush into winter! Let’s enjoy the changing colours, crisp breezes and a warm cup of joe. True, summer is great but when the seasons change we just change with them. Change is once again blowing into our store as the newest trends this year seem to be more pronounced than ever. Minimalism is the movement in men’s suits this season. Little-to-no visible patterning and a steady reliance on dark shades — black, gray and brown being the preferred hues. The overall look is one of clean lines and quiet elegance. Read all about it on page 58. This fall, as always, knits are at the front and centre of style. Among the collective offerings are long-sleeved knit shirts, such as the round-necked Henley with its unique six-button front placket, a popular garment on its own as well as for layering under a checked work shirt or over a dress shirt and tie. Sleeveless sweater vests make for great layering too when worn under a suit or a sport jacket. Cardigans continue to double as a jacket for either dress-casual or casual attire. Our article on the latest knitwear is on page 30. How to layer it all? See page 8. Lastly, the hottest coat trend in Canada this season is indisputably the quilted down, winter-killing jacket with coyote fur hood trimming by Canada Goose. So hot has this jacket become in the past couple of years that the company can hardly keep up with the demand in Canada, America and Europe. Come check out our selection and read all about them in our article “The Great White Way” on page 40.
We never forget the ladies and enjoy updating you on the latest trends as well. This season, style markers from every modern decade from the 1920s to the 1990s dot the collections, yet no one era has emerged completely victorious. Indeed few period looks come pack- aged head-to-toe. Little things, it’s proverbially said, mean a lot. Take this season’s styles, for example. Trend-spotters can and have focused on everything from material elements such as tweed and fur to accessories like stockings and boots to major pieces such as flared trousers and the tailored suit to period influences from most of the 20th century’s decades. What few have mentioned are today’s sleeves. To us, however, these may just prove the most pivotal feature of all for fall. We cover it all for you in this issue.
There’s plenty more great stuff in the following pages on store events, travel to Spain, our interview with Oprah Winfrey, cham- pagnes, luxurious autos, local restaurants and of course the top trends hitting runways this season. This is the largest and most compre- hensive magazine we’ve sent out to date. Read and enjoy!
